Math tutorials:

Our primary curricula for math tutorials at CSCL are Khan Academy, and the Art of Problem Solving, with occasional borrowing from Singapore Math, Glenn Ellison’s Hard Math for Elementary School, and anything else interesting.

Reading tutorials:

Kids who want help with reading can pair up with a counselor for one-on-one reading.  This is a really good option for kids who are just learning to read, as well as for kids who have basic reading skills but are not strong readers or are otherwise nervous about reading in a group setting.

Writing tutorials:

Writing work is based on workshops by 826 Valencia, a very successful writing tutorial project based in San Francisco. They are designed to be fun, low-stakes projects to get the creative juices flowing, and get kids used to writing in a variety of different contexts.

Programming tutorials:

Many of the kids who come to P&C already have some familiarity with Scratch, a block-based computer programming platform for kids. For kids who want to go a step further, we are offering one-on-one sessions in Python, a programming language that emphasizes simplicity and code readibility.

Making [something]:

Woodworking or mechanical systems or electronics or robotics or bookbinding or origami. Making a gumball machine, making a cardboard computer. This is a pretty broad topic, but it’s pretty central to what we’re about!
